Card Briefs: Amex Formally Starts Internet Mail Service

American Express Travel Related Services Co. said it has formally launched its AmExMail service after a five-month test exceeded expectations.

Anyone can enroll in the free Internet electronic mail service, which comes with a permanent e-mail address, but American Express card members get added benefits such as bigger mailbox capacity and toll-free customer service support.

American Express worked with USA.NET Inc., in which it owns a minority interest, to develop and administer the system. It allows for delivery of customized information, such as news and stock quotes, and for the leaving of personal reminders.

"AmExMail allows us to provide customers with an easy and reliable way to manage all of their communications, whether they are at home, in the office, or on the road," said Larry Kutscher, vice president of interactive enterprise development at American Express. "And with AmExMail, customers can count on the traditional American Express level of integrity, security, and privacy."
