Tech Bytes: NationsBank Offering Banking on the Net

Nations- Bank Corp. announced an Internet banking service to complement its personal financial management software for home banking.

Called NationsBank Online, the Web site allows customers to sign up and immediately check balances on a range of accounts, order copies of checks, and send e-mail. Transfers between accounts will be available in the summer, but there are no plans to offer bill payments.

"This is for people not looking for a full (financial manager) service or who want the ability to do banking through a browser" such as those from Netscape or Microsoft, said Chuck Hieronymi, senior vice president of PC banking development at NationsBank.

More than 500,000 NationsBank customers have copies of Meca Software's Managing Your Money, and most of them use the software for conducting on- line transactions.

The Web banking service is available to NationsBank and former Barnett Banks Inc. customers in Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and Washington.
