Bank of N.Y. President Appointed Chairman

Bank of New York Co. said Tuesday that Thomas A. Renyi will succeed J. Carter Bacot as chairman of the $61 billion-asset banking company, effective Feb. 7.

Mr. Renyi, 51, will continue as president and chief executive officer. The appointment fulfills a succession plan articulated by Mr. Bacot in 1995, the bank said.

Mr. Bacot, who is retiring in February on the eve of his 65th birthday, has been at the helm of Bank of New York since 1982. He will continue to serve on the bank's board of directors.
