Card Briefs: Amex in 2 Alliances With European Firms

American Express Co. has signed an agreement with Generale Bank of Belgium to distribute American Express consumer and business cards.

Unlike other recent alliances with banks abroad, Generale Bank is not issuing American Express cards. It is promoting American Express products with take-one offers in branches, receiving a fee for each cardholder it attracts. Generale Bank also will refer its corporate customers to American Express for business cards.

Separately, American Express said it signed an agreement with the French travel company Havas Voyages to market a credit card that lets customers accumulate points toward travel-related discounts.
