Dime Bancorp Names Executive

MIDDLE ATLANTIC

Dime Bancorp, New York, promoted James E. Kelly, who was deputy general counsel and a senior vice president, to general counsel and executive vice president, succeeding Gene C. Brooks.

For the past three years Mr. Kelly, 46, had also been executive assistant to Lawrence J. Toal, the company's chairman, president, and chief executive officer.

Mr. Kelly joined Dime in 1987 and was promoted to senior vice president and managing attorney in 1990 and deputy general counsel in 1995.

Mr. Brooks, 48, was named senior legal adviser and director of the office of the secretary, both newly created posts. He will assume duties in corporate compliance and insurance, and will continue to manage Dime Savings Bank's supervisory goodwill lawsuit.

He had been general counsel since 1994, when the company bought his previous employer, Anchor Bancorp.

Both men report to Mr. Toal.
