In Brief: Longtime State Banking Chief to Step Down

Nebraska's top banking regulator is leaving office to rejoin the private sector.

James A. Hansen, director of the State Department of Banking and Finance since January 1991, announced his resignation effective June 2. Mr. Hansen, 59, has held the post longer than any director since the 1950s.

"It is with mixed emotions that I am leaving state government," Mr. Hansen said. "It has been an experience I will never forget and always look back on with pleasure."

Mr. Hansen was appointed by Gov. E. Benjamin Nelson, whose own two-term tenure ends in January 1999. In 1995 and 1996, Mr. Hansen was also chairman of the Conference of State Bank Supervisors.

Mr. Hansen, who has served as president of three community banks during a 25-year banking career, said he is considering several options in the private sector but declined to get specific. But, he said, "It's safe to say I won't be too far from the financial services industry."
