In Brief: Former Chase Exec Is Charged with Fraud

A former chief financial officer of Chase Manhattan Corp.'s Chase USA unit was charged in a Manhattan federal court with bank and loan fraud in connection with a $4.36 million loan scheme.

In a press release Thursday, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York said John F. Wilson was arrested at his home in Redding, Conn., and will be arraigned Friday in federal court.

According to the complaint, Mr. Wilson, a former chief financial officer and senior vice president of Chase USA's credit card division, was charged with three counts of filing a false and fraudulent loan application and one count of bank fraud.

Wilson tried to obtain $4.36 million in loans from Chase Manhattan and Webster Bank in Cheshire, Conn., the complaint said.

A spokesman for Chase said Mr. Wilson, 44, joined the bank in January 1997 and left last month. The spokesman, Ken Herz, declined to comment on the charges against Mr. Wilson. A Webster Bank spokesman said Wilson applied for a mortgage loan from Webster.
