Smart Bits: Calif. Network Maker Offers Spyrus Security

Aventail Corp., a leading corporate networking supplier, has announced a high-assurance data security program using technology supplied by Spyrus.

The companies said they will jointly market Aventail ExtraNet Center, which corporations can use to extend their on-line reach to customers and traveling employees, with Spyrus' Rosetta smart cards and public key infrastructure system.

Aventail chief executive officer Evan Kaplan called the tie-in "a natural fit," because the two companies "share a vision to improve the way businesses collaborate and conduct commerce with business partners, suppliers, consultants, and customers."

The approach enables security policies to be imposed at multiple levels, adjusting to the needs of various constituencies.

In the smart card, "we have a secure, portable entity," said Spyrus CEO Sue Pontius. "Manifesting security in a smart card gives the user the ultimate convenience and raises the bar for easy-to-manage, highly secure solutions."
