In Brief: HP, Ariba of Calif. Start Venture in Germany

Hewlett-Packard Co. said it has formed a European cooperative technology center with Ariba Inc., developer of a popular business-to- business commerce framework called the Operating Resource Management System.

The center, in Boeblingen, Germany, will be staffed by personnel from both Silicon Valley companies, to assure system scalability and to provide pre-sale technical support.

Hewlett-Packard, which had a pre-existing alliance with Ariba, has 10 such cooperative technology centers with other vendors.

"HP is a major partner in our endeavors in the European market," said Rob DeSantis, Ariba's vice president of international operations, based in Amsterdam. "We believe the European CTC will provide substantial benefit to our customers by allowing us to tune our joint solutions specifically to their needs."

Hewlett-Packard CTC manager Gerhard Lindemann said Ariba "will be one of our major partners in realizing our E-Services vision. ... We will be rolling out this concept throughout Europe over the coming months."
