In Brief: Microsoft, Commerce One to Mesh Systems

Microsoft Corp. said it is expanding its relationship with Commerce One Inc. of Walnut Creek, Calif.

As a follow-on to Microsoft's recently established BizTalk framework, which Commerce One and numerous other electronic commerce vendors supported, the two companies' programs will be closely integrated.

Any BizTalk software application will interoperate with any business-to- business site that uses Commerce One's MarketSite system, including that company's own MarketSite.net.

"We believe this collaboration will greatly expand participation in MarketSite.net and other MarketSite trading communities around the world, creating economies of scale for Commerce One customers and their trading partners," said Commerce One vice president Chuck Donchess.

Mr. Donchess said his company's Common Business Library consists of document building blocks in XML, the eXtensible Markup Language, around which Microsoft built BizTalk as a proposed common platform for e-commerce. Such XML environments "are critical to reducing barriers to entry for all trading partners," he said.

Common Business Library has been deployed in several places, including the catalogue interoperability pilot for U.S. government purchasing, said Randall Whiting, president of the electronic commerce consortium CommerceNet.
