First Republic Bank in Philadelphia has hired the leader of Mellon Bank's efforts to serve small and midsize companies over the Internet.

James V. Schermerhorn held the title of manager of national business banking at Pittsburgh-based Mellon, his employer for 25 years. First Republic, which is owned by $537 million-asset Republic First Bancorp, made him chief lending officer and an executive vice president.

His new job entails developing corporate relationships in the Philadelphia area and evaluating regional and national opportunities in electronic commerce and other alternative delivery systems.
