Tech Bytes: Finance Firm Buys IBM Network PCs

International Business Machines Corp. said it has sold 8,000 of its network computers, called Network Stations, to American General Finance.

The terminals are "thin clients," which simplify personal computer maintenance by relying more heavily on network servers.

"We think 1999 will be the year when people make the move toward a thin infrastructure," said Edward Petrozelli, general manager of IBM's network computer division. "There will be a need for both regular PCs and a variety of thin clients," he said.

American General Finance, one of the country's largest providers of consumer lending and credit-related insurance products, replaced outmoded terminals in more than 1,300 consumer loan offices. The Evansville, Ind., company is to use its new network computers for processing loan applications and improving productivity.
