Bank of Glen Burnie in the Maryland community of that name has hired John I. Young as chief operating officer.

The job puts him in charge of daily operations, data processing, network services, and year-2000 compliance. The bank is owned by $218 million-asset Glen Burnie Bancorp. Mr. Young had worked for the bank as a consultant since 1986, when he helped install its original in-house computer system. He was president of Young Harris Inc., a Baltimore consulting company he started in 1980.

He has 30 years of financial services experience.

Mr. Young will be a senior vice president at Glen Burnie.

His predecessor, executive vice president Michael P. Gavin, resigned. Mr. Gavin came to Glen Burnie in January of last year from Susquehanna Bank in Baltimore, where he was senior vice president and director of operations.

Susquehanna bought Baltimore-based Atlantic Federal Savings Bank, of which he had been president, in 1995.
