Compass Taps Richard Vogel For Phoenix Job In Arizona Unit

Compass Bancshares, Birmingham, Ala., has promoted veteran Phoenix banker Richard L. Vogel to city president of its Arizona Bank subsidiary in Phoenix.

Mr. Vogel, who has 16 years of banking experience, joined Arizona Bank in March as executive vice president and manager of corporate banking in Phoenix. He came to the bank before its April purchase of nine Phoenix branches from Wells Fargo Bank-previously Norwest Bank Arizona. Arizona Bank operated four branches in the city before the branch acquisitions.

Mr. Vogel started his banking career at Chase Bank of Arizona, which was bought by First Interstate Bank of Arizona in 1994. He joined Norwest Bank Arizona in 1996 and was a senior vice president for corporate banking. At what became Wells Fargo last fall, he was commercial banking division manager for Phoenix.

Arizona Bank has 13 branches in the Phoenix area and 44 in the state. Compass Bancshares bought the bank last Dec. 15, adding $805 million of assets and $667 million of deposits. The Alabama company's asset total is $17.3 billion.
