In Brief: Commerce One Expanding to Pacific Rim

Commerce One Inc., a leader in business-to- business commerce systems, announced its expansion into the Asia-Pacific region, with vice president Lloyd Oki taking charge of the effort.

"We are seeing an increasing rate of adoption of e-commerce" in the region, said Mark Biestman, vice president of worldwide sales. "This is the opportune time for Commerce One to expand and Lloyd Oki will play a critical role in establishing Commerce One's presence."

Mr. Oki has more than 25 years of high-technology sales, operations, and business development experience with such companies as Wang Laboratories and Tandem Computers. He worked in Asia for Tandem beginning in 1990.

After Compaq Computer Corp. acquired Tandem in 1997, Mr. Oki became director of market development in Compaq's financial services and electronic commerce industry solutions group.

In one indication of its Asian approach, Commerce One announced a strategic alliance with Singapore Telecom.

"Electronic procurement is a critical element in SingTel's regional e- commerce strategy," said Singapore Telecom president and chief executive officer Lee Hsien Yang. "This partnership will help to accelerate the role of Singapore as the e-commerce hub of Asia."
