Short Takes: John Nuveen Hires Two in Bank Sales Push

John Nuveen & Co. has hired two executives to beef up its bank sales division.

On June 1, the Chicago-based investment company hired Oltea Mircea as its key account manager for banks. She was previously an account executive at Dow Jones Interactive Publishing, where she marketed a Web-based news information tool. She spent the four and a half years before that doing wholesaling support and marketing for Van Kampen American Capital.

Two weeks ago Nuveen hired Kerry Sullivan to head marketing efforts for the bank channel. She had held a similar post at KemperFunds. Among her duties is putting together non-product-specific marketing programs, said Michael Forstl, head of bank sales at Nuveen. One planned product is aimed at educating kids on investing. Banks will be able to use the program for presentations to local schools, for instance.

Mr. Forstl said the addition of Ms. Mircea will free him to spend more time deepening the company's relationship with its biggest bank partners.

The hirings come as Nuveen's bank sales of mutual funds and unit investment trusts are up 49% so far this year compared with a year earlier, Mr. Forstl said. Nuveen had $850 million of bank sales last year.
