In Brief: N.Y. State Reports on ATM Safety Violations

The New York State Banking Department on Friday said it issued 2,292 violations against the operators of the state's 3,400 ATM locations in 1998.

Nearly 80% of the violations were for inadequate lighting. The rest covered inadequate use of security cameras and other safety violations. The banking department collected $189,000 in fines.

The ATM Safety Act, which took effect in 1997, established statewide security measures for ATM machines. The state spent $120,000 to implement the program, or $24.72 per inspection. The banking department disclosed the data in a report sent to the state legislature.
