In Brief: Summers Confirmed as Treasury Secretary

The Senate on Thursday confirmed Lawrence H. Summers as Secretary of the Treasury.

Lawmakers voted 97-2 in favor of the economist, who has served as Robert E. Rubin's deputy since August 1995. Mr. Rubin announced his resignation May 12, but agreed to stay on the job until Mr. Summers was confirmed. The Senate Finance Committee approved Mr. Summers' nomination on June 22 by a 20-0 vote.
