Short Takes: Fidelity's Asia Fund Is Now Open-Ended

Fidelity Investments has converted its Emerging Asia Fund from a closed-end fund to an open-ended Advisor fund, making shares available for sale through brokers.

The move brings to 40 the number of funds in Fidelity's Advisor family, which is distributed through brokerages, banks, and other intermediaries.

There are now eight international Advisor stock funds. The Emerging Asia Fund, which was converted June 15, invests in stock and debt from Asian emerging-market issuers.

This year the Boston-based fund company has added a dozen funds to its Advisor family, which has $176.6 billion of assets under management.

The expansion of the family is part of Fidelity's plan to become the top fund seller through brokers.

Separately, Fidelity on Tuesday introduced a "fund of funds" mutual fund that invests in four Fidelity index funds.

The new fund is to invest 55% of its assets in the Spartan Market Index Fund and 15% each in the Spartan Extended Market Index Fund, the Spartan International Index Fund, and the Fidelity U.S. Bond Index Fund.

The fund is available only in a direct-sold, no-load format.
