In Brief: Grocery Chain in South Is Now Accepting Amex

Publix Super Markets Inc., has begun accepting American Express cards.

Publix, with 593 stores in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and Alabama, said the decision was driven by customer requests.

Tom Pojero, vice president of merchant acquisition, American Express, called the signing of Publix "a significant milestone for American Express toward its goal of widespread supermarket card acceptance."

An Amex survey has found that 51% of Americans consider it very important for supermarkets to accept plastic.
