Tech Bytes: E-Commerce Leader Honored for Efforts

Kaye Caldwell, CommerceNet's director of public policy, has received a Visionary Award from the Software Development Forum.

She was cited for efforts to promote acceptance by governments of electronic commerce initiatives. She led a campaign to get California law to treat custom software development as a service, rather than a taxable product.

Ms. Caldwell was in exclusive company, as other 1999 Visionary Awards went to Microsoft Corp. founder and chairman Bill Gates, Netscape Communications Corp. founder Marc Andreesen, James Gosling of Sun Microsystems Inc., venture capitalist Ann Winblad, and others.

"Ms. Caldwell's experience as a public policy leader continues to propel CommerceNet's leadership role in the industry," said Randall Whiting, president and chief executive officer of the Software Development Forum. The group's 500-plus members, including many banks, promote e-commerce around the world.
