Smart Bits: Datakey of Minn. Offers Remote Security System

Datakey Inc. has introduced PrivateAccess, a smart- card-based authentication system described as a "secure extranet in an instant."

An addition to the Signasure product line, PrivateAccess combines smart cards with digital certificates in an easily installed package for companies giving remote employees and customers access to their networks.

"Customers don't have to search for costly components or upgrade security modules-they already have the total package," said Datakey president and chief executive officer Carl Boecher.

In a move to broaden Signasure distribution through compatibility with a leading provider of public key encryption infrastructures, or PKIs, Datakey joined the recently announced OpenXchange Partner Program of Xcert International Inc. of Walnut Creek, Calif.

Colleen Kulhanek, director of corporate marketing for Datakey, said, "Our smart-card-based products enhance Xcert's PKI solution by upgrading information security to a two-factor system-something that is owned (a smart card) and something that is known (a password)."
