Smart Bits: Belgian Venture Picks Calif. Firm's Platform

Isocor, a prominent Internet software company, said it will provide the messaging and directory infrastructure for Cartes Jeunes in Belgium.

Cartes Jeunes is an Internet community service for young people that is being introduced by the Belgian telecommunications company Belgacom. Each person will receive a smart card as an identification device and loyalty- point tracker.

"The challenge facing Belgacom is to place ourselves ahead of the wave that is resulting from the convergence of Internet, communications media, and all forms of media content," said Jean-Yves Mertes, the Belgian organization's smart card business development manager.

The current Cartes Jeunes configuration is for 450,000 users, but Isocor's N-Plex Messaging Server can cope with multi-million populations. Isocor is also supplying its Global Directory Server, including a public key infrastructure for electronic commerce security, and the WebExpress Internet access system.
