Card Briefs: Trintech Software Kit Leaps Crucial Hurdle

Trintech Group said its S/Pay merchant software tool kit has passed muster with SETCo, which certifies compliance with the Secure Electronic Commerce standard for Internet credit card payments.

What Trintech calls its "merchant engine" can now display the SET logo to mark the successful completion of testing. The approval paves the way for Trintech to deliver its PayWare NetPOS system, which handles both SET and the more widely deployed Secure Sockets Layer protocol, with a "migration path" to the former from the latter.

Trintech had earlier obtained SETCo approval for its digital wallet system; another component, S/Pay gateway, is pending. Only one SET software vendor, GlobeSet Inc. of Austin, Tex., has certified as many as four products: its wallet, merchant, payment-gateway, and certificate authority systems.

The S/Pay tools that underlie PayWare NetPOS are based on technology that Trintech licensed last April from RSA Data Security Inc., of San Mateo, Calif. Trintech said several major international financial institutions are planning rollouts of PayWare NetPOS, which was announced in December.

"The award of the SET mark for the S/Pay merchant engine will help global standards like SET to gain momentum in the marketplace," said Steve Herz, Visa International senior vice president of Internet commerce.
