Tech Bytes: Bank One Expands AT&T, IBM Contracts

Bank One Corp. said on Wednesday that it is extending two major contracts -- a $1.4 billion, six-year deal for networking and data center outsourcing that it signed last year with AT&T and a $420 million, seven-year pact with International Business Machines Corp. -- to include operations of the former First Chicago NBD.

The contract expansion gives AT&T an additional $465 million to convert First Chicago's data and voice networking infrastructure. It gives IBM's global services division another $168 million to consolidate the former First Chicago's data center operations and help-desk support with Bank One's. The companies merged in October to form the nation's fifth-largest banking company.

The new contracts have been signed for six years.

Two hundred computing and data center specialists who work for the former First Chicago in Chicago and Detroit will become employees of IBM, and 100 of its voice and data networking specialists in that area will become employees of AT&T, an IBM spokesman said.
