Short Takes: Allfirst of Baltimore Adding Share Classes

Allfirst Financial Inc. of Baltimore is beefing up its proprietary mutual fund family by adding share classes to three portfolios.

On Sept. 1, Allfirst plans to add B shares for its Maryland and Pennsylvania tax-free funds. Allfirst also plans to add an A share class to its mid-cap equity portfolio, which currently has only an institutional class, said Michele Dalton, product manager of the Ark Funds and senior vice president of Allfirst Trust Co.

B shares charge investors a sales charge to cash out before a specified time, while A shares charge investors an up-front sales fee.

Allfirst has added several retail funds in past few years, Ms. Dalton said, and this will round out the portfolio. There are 20 Ark Funds, with $5.6 billion of assets under management. -- Cheryl Winokur
