In Brief: Europay International Hires 2 Senior Execs

Louis Noel-Joly said he has added two people to his senior management team.

Ajay Popat, a 10-year veteran of American Express Co., was named chief financial officer. Philippe Scheppers, formerly of J.P. Morgan & Co., the Euroclear and Cedel wholesale clearing networks, and Citibank, took the newly created post of director, strategic management and audit.

Mr. Joly said the moves will bolster Europay, which is closely aligned with MasterCard International, "both financially and strategically . . . as the marketplace becomes increasingly competitive and technology poses new opportunities and challenges."

Mr. Popat, who most recently was American Express' CFO for Europe, said "being in a truly European organization, whose business is growing at a phenomenal pace, enables me to be closer to market demands."

Mr. Scheppers said he also was drawn to the growth and competitiveness of the electronic payments business, adding that "bringing the strategic dimension to the audit function is a challenge that I will relish."
