Smart Bits: Calif. Firm Providing Technology to Sun

SCM Microsystems Inc. said it has become a primary supplier of smart card technology and devices to Sun Microsystems Inc., a vocal advocate of chip cards as part of its Java programming framework.

The agreement covers numerous SCM products, ranging from dedicated smart card interface chips and add-on boards to complete smart card reader peripherals.

SCM said its technology can serve as a bridge connecting smart cards, digital media cards, and other secure devices with personal computers, workstations, and digital set-top boxes.

The description fits well with the Sun-Java philosophy of reaching all types of equipment and devices without regard to operating system.

SCM president and chief executive officer Steve Humphreys said the Sun agreement is a major step in his company's OEM, or original equipment manufacturer, supply strategy.

"In 1999, we have signed many similar agreements with major OEMs for a variety of access and connectivity solutions for PCs, networks, digital television, and digital entertainment products," Mr. Humphreys said.

"In the year ahead, we expect to continue expanding our visibility with both OEMs and major corporations around the world."
