In Brief: Failed N.J. Bank's Owners Sue FDIC for Goodwill

The former owners of the failed Carteret (N.J.) Savings Bank filed suit against the FDIC in the U.S. Court of Federal Claims seeking to recoup $62.5 million it says it lost because of an accounting rule change.

Ambase Corp., the parent of Carteret, is one of more than 100 plaintiffs suing the government because it took away regulatory goodwill, which let them write off 40 years the negative net worth failing acquisitions acquired. Ambase is arguing that the prohibition of goodwill amounted to illegal seizure of assets by the government.
