Smart Bits: Tourism Chip System Slated for Fall Debut

Entertainment Smart Systems Inc. are at work on a travel/tourism chip card system scheduled for a fall introduction.

Travelers using the system's VentureCards, with stored values of $100 and $250, will be eligible for discounts at restaurants and stores.

In the rollout, slated for late fall, 200,000 cards are to be made available for use at attractions in Orlando and in Mexico's Cancun and Ixtapa.

Participating merchants are to use Verifone Omni 1250 card-reading terminals. The initial cards will be produced by Schlumberger and carry Precis' stored-value application, PrecisCache.

They will be sold at discount through selected travel agencies and a Web site.
