Tech Bytes: HP Makes Additions To Certification Setup

Hewlett-Packard Co. said it has put an "unprecedented range of authentication options" into its DomainGuard Certification Program, unveiled in early September.

As part of the company's Praesidium data security framework, DomainGuard enables Hewlett-Packard customers to pick and choose the user authorization and authentication options deemed best suited for a given network application or service.

Roberto Medrano, general manager of HP's Internet security division, said it is responding to the growing need for electronic businesses "to control both who has access to their Web sites, and what they can do with the information."

"Our certification program changes the network security landscape," he added, "by providing the most comprehensive array of choices for adding strong user authentication when implementing extranets or PKI (public key cryptography infrastructure) strategies."

Major data security vendors -- including RSA Security Inc., Entrust Technologies Inc., GTE Corp.'s Cybertrust unit, Baltimore Technologies, and Spyrus -- jumped on the Praesidium open-standards bandwagon with statements of support.
