Tech Bytes: Cornell Venture Forms Finance Computer Lab

Cornell University and technology company SGI of Mountain View, Calif., have opened a Financial Industry Solutions Center to specialize in computational problems in risk management and financial engineering.

Thomas F. Coleman, a computer scientist and director of Cornell's computing center, will direct the joint venture. He is assisted by Robert A. Jarrow, professor of finance and economics at Cornell's Johnson Graduate School of Management.

Mr. Jarrow is also director of research for Honolulu-based Kamakura Corp., developer of the Kamakura Risk Manager system.

Vendors contributing technology and expertise to the solutions center include Natick, Mass.-based MathWorks Inc., Vienna, Va.-based MicroStrategy Inc., and New York-based Numerix Inc.
