Tech Bytes: Va. Network Firm Buys British ATM Company

Transaction Network Services Inc., which provides communications infrastructure support to major electronic banking and card networks, announced the acquisition of Sligos Payment Services PLC, which is based in the United Kingdom.

Transaction Network's U.K. company, TNS TransXpress Holding, was the nominal buyer from Sligos Payment's Paris-based owner, Atos SA. In a similar deal in March, TNS acquired Atos Ireland Ltd., now named Switchtran Ltd.

The Sligos operation in the London area provides automated teller machine management services. TNS views it as a way to gain an advantage in the rapidly growing dial-up ATM market.

The acquisition "is a further step toward the offering of a full-service ATM management and processing platform to customers in both Ireland and the U.K.," said Transaction Network Services president and chief executive officer John J. McDonnell Jr.

He said he expects Switchtran to grow along with the dial-up ATM business throughout Europe.
