In Brief: Chase Tests Electronic Corporate Bill System

Chase Manhattan Corp., one of the three banks behind the closely watched Spectrum bill presentment venture, has selected software from BlueGill Technologies Inc. to help its corporate customers send electronic bills.

Chase is using BlueGill's i-Banker system. The $357 billion-asset bank is already testing the system internally with Chase credit card bills and will begin sending those bills to the public next year.

Richard Erario, vice president of electronic commerce with Chase, said the bank's goal is to allow corporate customers to reach as many customers as possible with electronic bills.

Chase will make bills from its corporate clients available to retail customers at its home banking Web site. It will also send bills to Spectrum, which serves as a bill-routing conduit between Chase and Spectrum's two other partners, First Union Corp. and Wells Fargo & Co. That means retail customers of First Union or Wells will be able to receive bills from corporations that are Chase customers.

Last month Just In Time Solutions Inc., a San Francisco software company that competes with BlueGill, announced it was providing the bill presentment software to Wells for the bank's own billing needs. Just In Time is also involved in development of the Spectrum bill-routing system.
