Bull Co-Sponsoring Java Competition

Bull Smart Cards and Terminals has joined forces with Sun Microsystems, STMicroelectronics, and Europay International in sponsoring a competition in using Java programming technology with mobile telephones.

The companies said they want to spur creativity in the use of SIM, or subscriber identity module, technology, which typically takes the form of smart cards to authenticate customers using GSM phones. GSM is the Global System for Mobile communications standard prevalent in Europe.

Ten finalists are to be awarded 60,000 euros ($64,000) and will be invited to work with Bull in commercializing their proposals. Bull is incidentally seeking to strengthen its position in the GSM market, said David Levy, chief executive officer of the French computer company's smart card unit.

Entry forms are due Oct. 31 and can be found at the cp8.bull.net Web site.
