Citigroup announced Tuesday that Mr. Aziz, 49, is returning to his native Pakistan as minister of finance. The appointment, which was expected, caps a career that has taken Mr. Aziz to management posts around the world. His departure date could not be learned.

"The feeling of the company is that this is one of the most exciting opportunities," he said. He said positions could be added in the United States, Europe, Japan, and other markets.

Mr. Aziz, an executive vice president, was named head of global private banking in April 1997. Previously, he headed corporate banking for the Europe, Middle East, and Africa region and for the Asia/Pacific region, and served as corporate planning officer. -- Debra Cope
