In Brief: Ag Chief Says Loan Fund Faces Depletion

depleted by Dec. 31 -- just three months into the new fiscal year, Agriculture Department Secretary Dan Glickman said Thursday.

Mr. Glickman urged Congress to approve supplemental funding for the department's Farm Service Agency loan programs. "Demands for USDA loans continue to increase, and there is very little money in this bill to meet this demand," he said Wednesday. "Right now we have the authority to provide $3 billion in loans -- $2 billion less than we need."
