In Brief: New Brokerage Chief Named at 1st Union

Daniel J. Ludeman has taken over as chief executive of First Union Corp.'s brokerage unit, succeeding James R. Boris, who resigned at the end of October.

Both executives came to First Union with its purchase this year of Everen Capital Corp., a regional brokerage firm.

Mr. Ludeman, 42, had been president of the brokerage. He will oversee 6,300 sales representatives who work in the bank's branches and in outside offices.

Mr. Ludeman's "demonstrated leadership gives me every confidence that our retail brokerage can be a leader in the industry," said Donald McMullen, vice chairman of First Union and head of its capital management group.
