In Brief: John Puelicher, Former M&I Chairman, Dies

John A. Puelicher, the chairman of Marshall & Ilsley Corp. from 1963 to 1989, died at home on Oct. 30 of liver cancer. He was 78.

Mr. Puelicher was the third member of his family to serve as chairman of the banking company, which grew during his tenure to $7.15 billion of assets from $420 million.

He served on the Wisconsin Banking Review Board and as vice chairman of the Governors Board for Economic Development. In 1995 the Puelicher Center for Banking Education was opened at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, made possible by gifts from the Puelicher family.

Mr. Puelicher is survived by his wife, Melissa Orr Puelicher, daughters Nancy Phipps and Mary Uihlein, sister Dorothy Ann Van Housen, and three grandchildren.
