savings and loan institutions received a favorable rating on year-2000 preparedness from Weiss Ratings Inc. on the basis of a study of disclosed budgets and expenditures.

Financial institutions fared better than many large companies in other industries. In the telecommunications industry, 73.3% of 19 rated companies were in the low or below-average categories. Four of eight U.S. airlines also were low or below average.

Receiving favorable ratings were 67% of electric utilities, 80% of securities brokers, and 100% of semiconductor companies and railroads.
