Smart Bits: MasterCard Program Enlists a Fujitsu Unit

MasterCard-Europay Chip Vendor Services Program.

Amdahl, a subsidiary of Fujitsu Ltd. of Japan and a longtime ally of the Mondex International program that is 51% owned by MasterCard International, said access to the training and education program will improve its expertise and business opportunities relating to multiple-application smart cards.

Fujitsu is a member of Maosco Ltd., the governing consortium of the Mondex-developed Multos operating system, along with MasterCard, the card association's Europay affiliate, and others.

Amdahl's participation in the vendor program "will strengthen our efforts to attract and support new customers that require exceptional smart card products and services," said Mike Harris, senior vice president of the MasterCard chip group.

Amdahl has also taken a minority stake in the Mondex Korea franchise. Smart card group general manager Joe Casola said that is "a significant step" toward a "global presence" for the group.

The other South Korean franchise holders are MasterCard Korea, Kookmin Bank, Korea Credit Communication Inc., KDB Capital, and Terasource Venture Capital.
