Capital Briefs: OTS Grants Charter to L.A. Fund Company

The Office of Thrift Supervision granted a federal trust charter on Thursday to Capital Group Cos., which also owns the nation's third-largest mutual fund family.

The Los Angeles-based corporation plans to move about $65 billion of trust accounts from its state-chartered subsidiary to the new institution, Capital Bank and Trust Co. The federal charter provides more leeway in serving clients across state lines.

As of Sept. 30 the subsidiary, Capital Guardian Trust Co., administered $98 billion of assets, and its American Funds mutual funds managed $250 billion of assets.
