In Brief: Mich. Start-Up May Have Overstated '98 Earnings

Michigan Heritage Bancorp of Novi may have to restate its 1998 earnings to make an addition to its loan-loss reserve.

On Feb. 1 the 19-month-old company reported a fourth-quarter profit of $125,000, up from $106,000 in the third quarter. But Darryle J. Parker, chief financial officer, said that statement was filed by mistake. Mr. Parker said new information, which he refused to disclose, is forcing the bank to consider increasing its loan-loss reserve. The expense would be counted against 1998 earnings.

Mr. Parker said Michigan Heritage hopes to clarify the situation and issue a revised earnings statement this month.
