In Brief: NationsBank Unit Hires Salomon Executive

NationsBanc Montgomery Securities has hired Salomon Smith Barney Inc. banker Barry Newman as senior managing director and director of technology investment banking.

Mr. Newman will be based in San Francisco and report to Carter McClelland, the firm's director of investment banking.

Since 1996, Mr. Newman had served as head of global technology at Salomon in San Francisco, where he oversaw a team of 50 bankers worldwide. He had worked at Salomon Brothers in both technology and mergers and acquisitions since 1994.

Technology and Montgomery have been closely linked since the firm began building its reputation as a leading West Coast brokerage on the back of Silicon Valley.

Mr. Newman's "intellectual edge and expertise in technology will help us meet our ambitious goals in this space," Mr. McClelland said in a statement.

The hiring of Mr. Newman comes after a series of defections from Montgomery, which is owned by the new BankAmerica, Charlotte, N.C.
