Short Takes: Small Mass. Bank Buys Insurance Agency

Hoosac Bank of North Adams, Mass., bought its first insurance agency last month.

Hoosac, a $191 million-asset bank in western Massachusetts, said Coakley, Pierpan, Dolan & Collins Insurance Agency is now an autonomous subsidiary.

The operation will take over part of a building that until recently housed a Howard Johnson's restaurant in Williamstown, Mass. The rest of the building will house a bank branch. The project is expected to cost $2.6 million.

Last year Hoosac was the first bank to announce it would take advantage of Massachusetts legislation passed in May to let state banks sell insurance.
