Gunnell to Lead Calif. Operation Zions Bought From Sumitomo

California Bank and Trust, San Diego, a unit of Zions Bancorp., has hired William H. Gunnell to run the greater Los Angeles branches it bought from Sumitomo Bank of Japan.

The Oct. 1 purchase of Sumitomo of California and its Grossmont Bank brought California Bank and Trust 25 retail and two business branches in Los Angeles, Orange, and Ventura counties. Mr. Gunnell will be executive vice president for the market.

He was chief credit officer and an executive vice president at Manufacturers Bank in Los Angeles. Earlier he worked 20 years at Security Pacific Corp., winding up as a senior vice president and administrator.

Still earlier he was a director of Hong Kong-based Bank of Canton, managing corporate business in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Seoul, London, Frankfurt, and Toronto.
