Capital Briefs: NAACP Praises 'Steadfast' BankAmerica

Recognizing BankAmerica Corp.'s commitment to minority lending, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People on Tuesday presented the bank with its 1999 corporate image award.

Kweisi Mfume, the group's president, cited the bank's "steadfast efforts with the NAACP to enable increasing numbers of African-Americans, Latinos, and Asians to participate in our economy as homeowners and entrepreneurs."

The NAACP credited BankAmerica-funded community development resource centers with infusing minority communities with more than $100 million since 1992.

BankAmerica chairman Hugh L. McColl Jr. said, "This award means my company has been successful in tackling one of our greatest challenges ... making sure that in running our business, we do the right thing for everyone in our communities."
