Smart Bits: Gemplus Ships 20 Millionth MPCOS Card

Gemplus said it has delivered its 20 millionth MPCOS card to NETS, the Network for Electronic Transfers in Singapore.

MPCOS, the Multi-Application Payment Chip Operating System, has been on the market since 1994. NETS, operator of the CashCard electronic purse system, is its biggest user, Gemplus said.

It said Asia has been the biggest market for MPCOS cards but more than 200 customers around the world use it also in electronic banking, identification, transit and toll, access control, loyalty, and other applications.

Gemplus recently introduced the MPCOS-EMV microprocessor card family, which complies with the Eurocard-MasterCard-Visa standard for card-terminal interfaces.

"NETS and Gemplus have been sharing a close working partnership in many projects," said NETS chief executive officer Wee Tew Lim, who was presented a special card commemorating the milestone. He said the relationship is valuable to NETS in "its work toward making Singapore a cashless society and e-commerce hub in the next millennium."
