Short Takes: E-Trade, United Form Free Air Mile Program

E-Trade Group Inc. of Palo Alto, Calif., announced details of a free air mile agreement with United Airlines on Tuesday.

The deal, reached in January, is part of E-Trade's bid to reach more on- line customers.

The program targets United's 25 million frequent-flier or Mileage Plus customers. United Airline frequent-fliers who open an E-Trade account with a minimum of $10,000 will be rewarded with a sign-up bonus of 10,000 air miles.

Current E-Trade customers can also earn up to 10,000 miles by opening a qualifying E-Trade account. The brokerage also will offer as many as 5,000 free miles to customers who refer friends to E-Trade.

The broker-dealer also unveiled the April E-Trade Stock Game, a competition that closes April 10, where the winners will be determined by the greatest return on a fantasy portfolio. First prize is 500,000 free miles.
