Compasss Bank Designates McMahen as Vice Chairman

Compass Bank in Birmingham, Ala., has named Charles E. McMahen as its vice chairman, a newly created post.

Mr. McMahen, 59, who is based in Houston, is in charge of corporate and community banking, acquisition activities. He has also been responsible for Compass' expansion throughout the Sunbelt-Florida to Arizona-for nine years.

He was also chief executive officer of Compass Banks of Texas until its merger into Birmingham-based Compass Bank in the fourth quarter.

Mr. McMahen came to Compass in 1990 from Bank One Texas, where he was group chairman of community and retail banking. Earlier he was group chairman of personal banking, operations, and administration for Dallas- based MCorp; president and chief operating officer of Southwest Bancshares; and chief financial officer of Texas Commerce Bank.

D. Paul Jones Jr., 56, is chairman and chief executive of Compass Bank and its holding company, Compass Bancshares.
